Tri City Boxing Championship - 2002Yes fight fans, it's back. A night of dinner, boxing matches and draws. The Whip Productions held its second annual fundraiser, The Tri City Boxing Championships. The night started off with dinner accompanied by light dinner music in the background. After dinner, the ring announcer Dino Roumel announced the first fight of the evening. To start off the night, Fab Portilo of the Waterloo Boxing Club met Marino Manno of Shamrock Boxing Club. Guests in attendance included: MP Lynn Myers, Art Binkowski (2000 Olympics), Carlos Newton (ultimate Fighter), Kelly Vanderbeek (world class skier), Dave Hook (comedian), Arnie Boehn (boxing coach), Brent Hanson (CKCO TV) and Lisa Brown (WIBF Women's World Boxing Champion).
During half time of the boxing event, former boxer Greg Johnson did a spectacular skipping exhibition. There was then a silent auction for a glove and shirt autographed by Laila Ali. Other bouts on the card saw Sean Roberts victorious over Cody Dextater; Matt Cowles scoring a 3rd round TKO over Gary Bautour of Guelph; and in the heavyweight division, Edmundo Roa defeated Ted Dwyers.
The event was hosted by the WBC's #1 Jr. Middle Weight Contender, Fitz Vanderpool who was pleased with the turn out. Over the years the Tri City has produced numerous world-class amateur boxers. Some include Bob Proulx, Wayne Thompson, Lennox Lewis, Chris and Greg Johnson, Sydney and Fitzroy Vanderpool as well as Art Binkowski, to name a few. Some of these fighters have gone on to be successful as professionals. Vanderpool was very pleased with the enthusiastic crowd that turned out to support the local up and coming boxers. At the intermission Fitz took the ring center to thank some of the sponsors that helped to make the event a possibility for the fighters.
Money raised went to the United Way of Kitchener/Waterloo & The Waterloo Boxing Club.
Vanderpool finished off with his creedo...
